Voyage Tracking

Voyage Tracking

Now theres real choice in the market. Over the past 10 years - the Woodvale Challenge team have worked hard to create the best package for Ocean Rowing voyage tracking. There are two main systems that can be used:-

Argos Tracking Beacons

This is French millitary satallite based tracking system used by ocean sailers and ocean rowers all over the World. The beacons have an SOS function and the ability to send a set number of coded messages. The Argos system has been used by the ocean rowing races since their inception in 1997. We have a unique deal with Argos and a back office web based mapping system that allows expeditions and races to monitored. This information can be linked to any web site including our own independent tracking pages or our race event web site.

Beacons are monitored 24hrs per day and our experienced team can co-ordinate rescue services based on the Argos being used as a distress system.

Woodvale Challenge offers this service as part of the race structure and now as a new service to all independent rowing teams. We are the most cost effective provider of Argos beacons in the field of ocean rowing.

INMARSAT D Tracking System

Since the inception of the D+ tracking system back in 1998, Woodvale Challenge has worked closely with the development of this product. Now in it's third generation, the D+ system offers a unique tracking package that is now capable of standing alone from the boats main power system. The main limitation of the Argos system is the battery life - normally on extended journeys there is a need to take more than one beacon. The D+ system is uniquely different in this aspect. The new units have a self contained battery contained within the unit and the ability to re-charge from the mains. This means that the units have a realiable means of power source that makes the unit more realiable on longer passages. The units can also send coded messages and act as a disctress beacon.

The D+ units can be remotely interigated and can provide course and speed data uniquely different than that capable within the Argos unit. The cost of these units is half that of Argos. The service is supported 24hrs per day and the tracking information can be uploaded to a back office software package that creates tracking information. This information is then available for independent web sites or can be monitored on our own tracking pages.

We are currently tracking Glenn Edwards and John Williams on their row across the Indian Ocean using this system at the moment click here to follow their progress
