Why do I want to do this race? Its just gone from being an idea somebody told me about, to a naggiing thought, to the question 'why not me?' and now its a case of if I dont give it a go I wont be able to live with the thought of 'what if...?'

Ben and Mark are both Senior PE Officers in HM Prison Service and have both over 10 years experience in this field. In the sport of Ocean Rowing They have none! This will be the toughest challenge either of them has ever attempted, but they are quietly confident they can do well. They are raising money for Macmillan Cancer Care and Caudwell Children. As well as raising a large amount of money for two fantastic charities and the great sense of achievement completing this race will bring, they have one major goal.....Beating the two cheeky Aussies that we have come to know and love so well. Clark and Ryan, familiarise yourself with us at the start of the race because once we get going, you wont see us again!

Roger and Tom are of like minds when it comes to "Why are we doing the race?"
Firstly the idea of rowing an ocean became so infectious that the only cure was to go do it. Secondly, if you're going to row an ocean the chance to be involved in the inaugural race of the Indian Ocean made this a compelling challenge. Finally, being able to use such a project to raise funds & awareness for charitable causes provides the opportunity to leave behind a legacy that will endure long after the event itself is over.

Our goal is to promote the positive benefits of science particularly how it has, and still is, contributing towards our planet and our lives.  We strongly believe in science as an invaluable tool, where our advancing medical understanding is continually facilitating people’s lives and improving people’s health allowing them to enjoy life as much as possible.  This is of particular significance to us as Jamie is an IVF child.  So it is only because of our persistence to increase our understanding and knowledge that Jamie is alive.

IVF has helped so many people build the loving family that others take for granted, so this challenge offers a unique opportunity to demonstrate the success of IVF and remove any uncertainties that may remain over it.  We are also passionate about getting people to understand more about technologies that can reduce pollution levels and so we hope that by rowing across the ocean using only non-polluting solar power we can increase people’s belief in other sources of energy.

We feel that helping others and treating people’s health is important and have decided to raise money and awareness for Headway.  They work hard to support, care for and rehabilitate sufferers of brain injuries.  We have first hand experience of how fundamental Headway are to patients, as a close friend of James’s was hit by a car and suffered brain damage and Headway have been fantastic in supporting him and he is slowly recovering.

Many people when told of the journey we intend to undertake ask us the same question “why?” and we give everyone the same answer “for the challenge!”

All four of us are successful, competitive rowers, three of whom are predominantly coastal, between us we have over 30 years of rowing experience and numerous championship wins under our belts. For a few years now all four of us have had ideas on ocean rowing, and thought, if not dreamt of what it would feel like to row across an ocean; the sensation of being alone in such vastness, the emotion of finding hope and determination when it absolutely feels like you are never going to make it, and the final truly amazing sense of satisfaction when you arrive on the other side making up for any hardship endured along the way.

All of us train hard for our sport and we all know the overwhelming sense of elation when that training comes together to an ultimate success, and we all know the harder you have worked for that success the sweeter it becomes. We can not see any other challenge posing such adversities and hardships as rowing across the Indian Ocean will provide, but nor do we believe we will ever experience such euphoria and adulation from any challenge there after.

The Indian Ocean is a first and we aim to be the first across it!

A reason?  You mean we need any other motivation than making sure that a bunch of Poms can’t claim to be the fastest crew across our ocean (The Indian)?  On a serious note, we all love the ocean and are fascinated by the mental and physical challenge associated with a crossing of this magnitude.  We are also very eager to raise the profile of Surf Life Saving as a positive community organisation.

We are all hooked by the personal challenge and the adventure that this race will give us, and the opportunity to be the first women ever to row across the Indian Ocean is just amazing. Equally we are committed to ensuring that our charity benefits as much as possible from our row, and it is an honour to be able to contribute to the fantastic work they do.
