New Record Attempt Ocean Rowing Boat Unveiled

The naming ceremony of new record attempt ocean rowing boat to be held on Friday 24th August 2007 at the Oyster Shack Restaurant in Salcombe, Devon.

Simon Chalk, Guy Lavender, Ben Thackway, George Oliver and Mike Martin, will unveil their new ocean rowing boat ‘The Oyster Shack Ocean Challenger’ in Salcombe later this week at its official naming ceremony.

The crew aim to challenge the longest standing ocean rowing record across the Mid Atlantic from La Gomera, Canary Islands to Antigua, Caribbean. The record, which is currently held by the French team ‘La Mondiale’, has stood since 1992 at 35 days, 8 hours and 30 minutes, many have attempted to beat it but so far all have been unsuccessful.

Built to accommodate 6 men ‘The Oyster Shack Ocean Challenger’ is a 29ft x 6ft ocean rowing boat. Designed by Woodvale Challenge specifically for this voyage she is made from Carbonfibre and Kevlar making her the formula one of ocean rowing boats being amazingly strong while weighing in at around just 200kg!

The boat has been in design and development for over 3 years and has self righting capabilities that far exceed any other ocean rowing boat in the world today.

On board the crew will carry all of their supplies and provisions for the crossing – if they are going to break the record no outside assistance – however trivial - is permitted.

The revolutionary ocean rowing boat has been sponsored by local restaurateur Chris Yandell who runs the Oyster Shack in Bigbury and Salcombe and Jack Spratts in Salcombe.

The official ceremony will start at 11:30 with doors being opened to the public from 2pm – 6pm if you would like to have a closer look.

Chris Yandell commented;

‘The Oyster Shack challenge encapsulates the company’s philosophy of not just coping but excelling. This is one reason why such an endeavour strikes a cord with our organisation. The Oyster Shack is very proud to be associated with such an epic challenge. The opportunity to break world records doesn’t came about everyday and this particular challenge requires a  huge amount of teamwork similar to the successful running of a restaurant operation. The Oyster Shack wish the ‘off shore shackers’ the best of luck ‘

Simon Chalk commented;

‘We have been developing this boat design for some years now and it will be very exciting to see how it performs on the water in its Carbon Fibre and Kevlar form. The crew have been carefully selected for the qualities and attributes that can bring to the team and I feel confident that we have both the boat and the crew to bring this record home for Great Britain!’
