Ocean Rowers Come Back for More
Four previously unsuccessful female rowers from the Atlantic Rowing Race 2005, have come together to form the team Unfinished Business 07 and take on the Atlantic once again.
The girls; Tara Remington – formerly Team Sun Latte, Emily Kohl and Sarah Kessans – formerly American Fire and Jo Davies of Rowgirls say they are out to win not only the race but their battle with the Atlantic Ocean that was started two years ago but not completed due to a combination of circumstances.
At the last minute the girls have found a fours boat and are out to deal with some unfinished business left over from 2005. They will be rowing in the Woodvale Fours Class boat formerly known as Mount Spirit which was rowed across the North Atlantic in 2006 by the Team Commando Joe.
Anyone who has been following Ocean Rowing over the last few years knows that 2005 was an awful year for Ocean rowing, the weather in the Atlantic was the worst it has been for 50 years with constant tropical storms and even out of season hurricanes, all this bad weather conspired to prove disastrous for the four girls, each racing in their own teams. During ferocious storm conditions American Fire’s race came to an end when they suffered a terrible capsize which ended in them clinging to the upturned hull of their rowing boat for 14 hours before a dramatic rescue by the Sail Training vessel the Stavros and aided by the US Coastguard was carried out. Tara’s race ended when her boat Sun Latte started taking on water from a shark attack and began sinking with less than half an ocean to cross, her and her partner Ian were rescued by the Woodvale support yacht Aurora. Jo’s race ended less dramatically when she fell, injuring her back and making it impossible to continue to row as a part of her team of four Rowgirls.
The girls are busy making last minute preparations for the race, not helped by the fact that Sarah and Emily are in the US, Tara is on the other side of the world in her home country New Zealand. They say they will be ready to take on this challenge once again and this will succeed in their mission.
They not only wish to win this year’s Fours class but are also aiming to beat the Women’s record holders Mission Atlantic. They have the motivation and are determined not to let the Atlantic get away from them this time.
They will be rowing in aid of Meningitis Trust UK and Meningitis Trust New Zealand.
