New Year, New Records
Ocean Quest - Have you got what it takes?
Following in the wake of this years exciting battle between 3 boats out to break the mid Atlantic speed record from the Canary Islands to the Caribbean, Woodvale Challenge are excited to announce plans to campaign for five new ocean rowing records over the next 2 years.
Drawing on their extensive knowledge of rowing boat design and construction, in conjunction with the experience gained from organising the worlds toughest ocean rowing races, Woodvale Challenge intend to establish five new ocean rowing records on three of the worlds oceans:
North Atlantic (New York – Scilly Isles) distance 2829nm
The overall current record of 55 days has stood for over 100 years being established in 1896. The current record for a crew of 4 stands at 60 days.
1. June 2008 - World 1st, female crew of four.
2. June 2008 – Overall speed attempt, male crew of five.
North Pacific (Choshi, Japan – San Francisco) distance 4424nm
The overall current record of 130 days was set in 2005 by a solo rower. No attempt has ever been made by a crew of four.
3. June 2008 – World 1st and overall speed attempt, male crew of four.
Indian (Geraldton, Western Australia – Mauritius) distance 3173nm
The overall record of 64 days was set in 1971 by a solo rower. No attempt has ever been made by a female crew, or any crew of six.
4. April 2009 – World 1st and overall speed attempt, male crew of six.
5. April 2009 – World 1st female crew of six.
The very fact that many of the ocean rowing records have remained unbroken for so long is testament to the difficulty of undertaking these routes and the hardship and endurance required by those that try.
Individuals who believe they possess the grit, determination and sense of adventure required to be part of a conquering campaign are now invited to apply for team places.
Places are very limited and interest is expected to be high for this rare opportunity to become an integral part of these ocean quests. Successful applicants will have to undertake training in preparation and will be expected to make a financial contribution towards the cost of the campaign.
